The Ferdinand Effect presents an imaginary dialogue between Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) and Brazilian artist Fernando de la Rocque.
De la Rocque’s sensual gaze was inspired by three works by Hodler that combine nudity and time: Le jour (The Day), 1914 – Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva; La Nuit (The Night), 1889/90 – Kunstmuseum Bern; and Le Regard dans l’infini (The Gaze into Infinity) – Musée Cantonal de Beaux-Arts, Lausanne. The Ferdinand effect permeated him, causing him to work compulsively. Fernando produced sketches, embroideries and frottages – as he calls them – with his wax crayons on paper. Ferdinand and Fernando found themselves speaking the same language, inspired by parallelism and symbolism.
The artist Nacoca Ko will provide a counterpoint to ‘The Ferdinand Effect’ through her performances inspired by female archetypes.
