Blue, Bleu, Azul, the upcoming exhibition at Espace L, will present the works of Mai-Britt Wolthers and Mila Mayer. Both artists create work directly connected to nature and, more specifically, to the color blue.
Blue represents a myth and a symbol that has been extensively explored throughout the history of art.
Since ancient times, the cost of lapis lazuli (the Afghan stone from which the pigment was extracted) rivaled even that of gold. This stone was used for the making of jewelry, ritual objects, decorative items, and funerary masks. The cost of importing this mineral from the Afghan desert was extremely high. The Egyptians therefore developed their own synthetic pigment, produced from silicon dioxide, copper, and alkali. In Egyptian culture, blue was associated with the sky and with divinities.
In the medieval period, the Virgin Mary was often depicted wearing a blue robe. The choice of this color was not only due to its religious symbolism but also to its material value. Indeed, for centuries, blue was considered a noble color.
In the 1950s, the artist Yves Klein created a shade of blue that, over the years, became his signature and spread throughout the art world after the Second World War.
The dialogue created between Mila Mayer’s photography and Mai-Britt Wolthers’ painting will allow you to expand interpretations around the color blue.
